Budget-proof your wine buys with affordable, high-quality brands

There's a saying in the wine biz that alcohol is recession-proof, but you can bet the toasting for most people this holiday will not be with luxury brands. One of the fastest growing segments was wine for less than $15, especially less than $7. And there's more news: Cheap wines are better than they used to be. - 12/18/2008

Get your mind off the economy with a good wine book

Cold, snow and abbreviated hours of daylight spawn time to read about wine. And it's for sure, we could all use a good escape right about now. So curl up with a glass of your favorite grape and one of the year's new reads. - 12/11/2008

A quick Pinot primer

Pinot Noir is the Holy Grail for many a winemaker who has buried his or her nose in a glass of French red Burgundy, never to recover. The aromatics of good Pinot are seductive and haunting: red berry fruit (strawberries, cherries, plums), spice (clove, cardamom) and undergrowth (truffles, mushrooms). There can be a fleshy element also, gently referred to as "barnyard." - 12/10/2008

L. Mawby Vineyards marks 30th anniversary

With the holiday season upon us, we can be grateful for many things, including Larry Mawby's special niche in Michigan winemaking history: He is the only local vintner who only makes sparkling wines. - 12/04/2008

Angelina Italian Bistro, which overlooks Grand Circus Park, offers 15 wines by the glass to go with the Mediterranean-influenced menu.

The wines you find at the new Angelina Italian Bistro are as eclectic as the Italian-inspired food and the open, comfy, hip ambiance of the new restaurant that occupies the old Madison Theater at Grand Circus Park. - 11/20/2008

Give thanks for Rieslings from Michigan

This is the back label from a bottle of Chateau Grand Traverse Dry Riesling, which shows the sweetness scale. This new graphic takes the guesswork out of buying Riesling -- you can now determine just how sweet or dry it is.

What wine goes with turkey? Don't think twice: It's Riesling, the signature grape of Michigan. - 11/20/2008

Bill would ban retail wine shipments

New Lawton Ridge Winery steeped in Michigan wine history

The tasting counter at the new Lawton Ridge Winery in Kalamazoo is made from the staves of St. Julian's last cypress tank, which dates back to the 1930s.

Urban wineries are sprouting up across Michigan -- including many that are finding a niche with fruit wines, wines made from kits and wines made from grapes purchased from around the state or California. Owning a vineyard is not always an option. The new Lawton Ridge Winery in Kalamazoo, with a tasting room and winery, is different. - 11/13/2008
